SS-31 is a synthetic tetrapeptide with the amino acid sequence D-Arg-2′6′-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH₂, belonging to the Szeto-Schiller (SS) peptide class. Each vial contains 10mg of lyophilized SS-31 for research purposes only. Third-party tested with Certificate of Analysis (COA) available. Purity: >99%. COA Batches: MPSS001
SS-31 (D-Arg-2′6′-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH₂), also known as Elamipretide or MTP-131, is a mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide that selectively concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane. It interacts with cardiolipin, a phospholipid essential for the structural integrity of the inner mitochondrial membrane and the function of the electron transport chain. In preclinical and in vitro models, SS-31 has been shown to stabilize cristae architecture, reduce mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS), and support ATP synthesis efficiency.
Its unique alternating aromatic-cationic structure allows it to readily cross lipid bilayers without the need for an electrochemical gradient, distinguishing it from many other mitochondria-targeted compounds studied in research settings.
SS-31 is studied in vitro and in preclinical models for its potential effects on:

SS-31 (elamipretide) is a synthetic 4-amino-acid cell-permeable peptide that selectively binds cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane. In research it is studied for mitochondrial bioenergetics, cardiolipin-electron transport chain coupling, and cellular oxidative stress models. Supplied strictly for Research Use Only.
Yes. SS-31 and elamipretide refer to the same molecule. SS-31 was the developmental code; elamipretide is the international nonproprietary name. The molecule belongs to the Szeto-Schiller mitochondria-targeting peptide series.
SS-31 specifically binds cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane, while other mitochondria-targeting molecules use different mechanisms (such as triphenylphosphonium-based delivery or direct electron-chain interaction). Cardiolipin binding is the distinguishing feature in the published research literature.

SS-31 is studied in preclinical research on cardiolipin biology, electron transport chain function, ATP synthesis, and cellular oxidative stress model systems. All cited studies are conducted in cellular or rodent systems consistent with RUO classification.
Every batch of SS-31 ships with a third-party COA verifying purity by HPLC (>=99%), identity by mass spectrometry, and lyophilized mass. The batch-specific COA is published on this product page before purchase.
Lyophilized SS-31 is stored at -20C for long-term storage and 2-8C for short-term use within 30 days. Avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Store in original sealed vials, protected from light.
Elamipretide remains in clinical investigation for specific mitochondrial disease indications. The SS-31 supplied here is for laboratory and research use only and is not approved for diagnostic, therapeutic, or human use.
